The Taskforce on Middle East Anthropology
The Task Force on Middle East Anthropology was founded in 2002. We are a group of anthropologists working to preserve a space for open discussion on the Middle East/North Africa/Southwest Asia and academic freedom. Our goal is to further anthropology’s relevance to public discourse and politics.
Accomplishments through 2006:
* Publication of the article “Academics and the Government in the New American Century” in an award-winning issue of Radical History Review (Allen, L., L. Deeb, and J. Winegar. 2005. "Academics and the Government in the 'New American Century': a conversation with Rashid Khalidi." Radical History Review 93: 240-259.)
* Creation of regular workshops at the American Anthropological Association (AAA) Annual Meetings on Teaching about the Middle East, North Africa, and Islam.
* Running the Middle East Anthropology listserv (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aaamideast).
* Publication of “Academic Freedom and Professional Responsibility after 9/11: A Handbook for Scholars and Teachers”. Click on the link for more information and to download the Handbook.
